What Is A “Modern Award”?
A Modern Award sets out minimum entitlements for employees, and there are different awards for different industries. You can find the award that applies to your industry using Fair Work’s Award Finder Tool.
It sets out entitlements such as:
- Hours of work
So, as the employer, it’s your responsibility to ensure that you are providing your employees with their entitlements under the Award that applies to them. It’s also important to note that these Award entitlements are in addition to the National Employment Standards.
If your business is under a registered agreement, then the relevant award may not apply to your employees. However, this also depends on the terms themselves. For example, if the base rate of pay is lower than those in the award, the award entitlements will apply.
