A business name is simply the name your business trades under. If it is different from your own name, you generally have to register it before you start trading.
You do not need to register if you are:
- An individual trading under your own first name and surname
- A partnership trading under all the partners' names
- A company trading under its exact registered company name
Yes. ASIC requires an active Australian Business Number, or an ABN reference number from an application already in progress, before it will register a business name. If you do not have one yet, you can add ABN registration as an optional extra while you complete your business name application, so both are handled together.
Enter it in the search at the top of this page. We check it against ASIC’s records and tell you whether an identical or nearly identical name is already registered. Treat the result as indicative. ASIC makes the final call when it assesses your application, and a name that is already someone else’s registered trade mark can still be refused.
You'll need:
- Your ABN, or the reference number from an ABN application already in progress
- The legal name of the person or entity the business name will be held by
- Your main business address, which you can keep off the public register if you need to
- The date you want the registration to start
- The applicant's full name
- A business email address and contact phone number

The application itself takes around five minutes. Your name is registered once the application has been submitted and payment has cleared, which is usually within 24 hours. ASIC can take longer if your name needs a closer look.
No, and this is the most common misunderstanding we see. Registering a business name lets you trade under it. It does not make the name yours, and it does not stop a competitor using something similar. A registered trade mark is the right that gives you exclusive use of a name, logo or slogan for your goods and services. See trade mark registration.
Yes. There is no limit on how many you can hold, which is common when one business runs several brands. Each name is registered and renewed separately, and each carries its own fee.
Only if the company trades under something different from its exact registered company name. If Northside Studio Pty Ltd trades as “Northside Studio”, that shortened version is a different name and needs registering. If it trades under the full company name, you do not need one.
